Hungary in a few words…

Geography

It has an area of 93 030 km² that is a sixth of France.

The plains cover two thirds of the territory, the highest peak is Kékesteto (1015 m).

According to the census of February 2001, Hungary has 10,198000 inhabitants.

Hungarian, the official language belongs to the family of the Finno-Ugric languages.

The most important river is the Danube which flows across the country from the north to the south for 266 miles. The Tisza, major river of the Great Plain, cuts across the East of the country. Lake Balaton is the largest lake of Central Europe, it has an area of 231 square miles. The region attracts many tourists.

 

Parliamentary system
The Parliament has 386 seats. MP’s are elected for four years in elections which combine majority vote and proportional representation.

Successful transition
Since 1989, the economy of Hungary has completely changed. It has been modernised and has been integrated into the world economy and especially into the European economy.

The capital, Budapest has more than two million inhabitants. The city is the political, economic and cultural centre of the country. Budapest was born in 1873 when Buda and Pest were united.

The capital of Magyars, situated on both riversides of the Danube, include many thermal baths, some dating from the Roman time.

Other important cities are Debrecen, Miskolc, Szeged, Pécs and Gyor.
